Although clay coiling is one of the most basic methods of clay construction, beautiful and complex forms can be created using this technique. Talented craftsmen use coils in unusual and imaginative ways.
If facilities to make wheel thrown pots are not available, the coiling method can produce pots like many examples which have emerged as some of the best modern work. The pot is build by winding layers of clay coils horizontally. It is a band-mad process that is slower than throwing, but gives coiling it's vigorous, exciting quality and makes it unique.
